Inverter out -- extension cord?

1.MrWizard, the CB (circuit breaker?), transfer switch, and OEM circuit will be within 1' or so of each other. The only romex "run" will be from the inverter ~ 15' away. Since I am reinforcing the front storage compartment for the additional batteries, and installing the new inverter I had to drop the "corrugated plastic" anyway. I just don't have to run 30' to the rear of the 5er.
2.smkettner, I decided to move the new "converter" (PD9270)to the front compartment near the battery bank, (4ea,CR235 GC batteries) wired with #4ga, as from GenuinedealZ (nice recommendation), as well as mounting the "inverter" close by.
3.smkettner, When the 5er is at home I usually have it on shore power. I think your idea of wiring the inverter to the NC side of the TS sounds good. Since I did not plan to leave the inverter on all the time the reset issue would be an issue anyway. I was looking at the Progressive Dynamics PD5110010V, is that the one you installed?

The original converter was a WFCO 8955 that went belly-up! The upgrade to the PD9270 was based on inputs from you and others regarding the quality and charging algorithm. The new placement was certainly based on better charging capabilities. The main feed from the converter to the dc distribution panel is #6. (that last question was because of the battery/converter distance, correct?)

I would typically wire the inverter to the normally closed side of the transfer switch. Turn the inverter on and you have power. Plug in and the transfer switch releases the inverter and passes through utility power.

However some posts indicate the switch may not always be fast enough to prevent the dvd or satellite from reset. In this case you may want to reverse the input so if you have the inverter on it will remain the power source continuously until you turn it off. With inverter off then the utility power will be fed through just like normal.

Worst case you can just change the set up be reversing the inputs.

I recently installed a Progressive Dynamics 30a transfer switch and it works just fine.

Are you sure you need to move the converter? I would be inclined to leave it as is and just mount the inverter behind the main panel. Just use the main battery feed for inverter 12v supply. I assume it is #6 wire. You will be pulling 10 amps, maybe 20 max. This would allow the use of the first plug in transfer switch I posted above. This would require no pulling of wire, just make connections.

What converter do you have now? Are you moving for faster charging? What size wire connects the battery to main panel?

Yes.. But you have to bring wire from CB to the transfer switch then output of transfer switch goes to the OEM installed circuit, the romex which was pulled out of the breaker box and attached to the TS

Thanks MrWizard, and westend but the inverter is located in the front storage compartment and the entertainment center is located 34' away at the other end of the 5er. That is why I would like to connect at the existing ac/dc distribution which is mid-way. That way I only need to run 12/2 romex to the transfer switch that can be located at the breaker. SM, any suggestions on a particular switch? I also need to make sure I understand how it works. Scenario-

For non electrician
Just buy the way posted transfer switch
And place it behind the entertainment devices
Attach inverter power to input number two
Attach power strip to ouTput
Plug ts input number one into wall outlet
It's that simple
Or just manually move power strip plug from wall duplex to end of ext cord

Easy but I have no diagram.

Transfer switch has two input, one output.

Remove circuit romex from breaker panel and attach to TS output.

Connect inverter to input A.

Connect new piece of romex from the breaker panel to input B.

Connect/remove means all three wires. That new romex connects in the same position that you removed the existing circuit romex.

Yes and it is Another $20 to get a regular 30 amp from Progressive Dynamics or GoPower.

You could run single romex out to a J-box with an outlet but that would cost as much and seems more complex.
