Inverter Swap 1000 for 2000watts

Ok guys simmer down you are both right IMHO but let me add i know nothing lol. My manual actually does say "freedom 10" and i must admit people have chimed in w quotes from the combi manual that made no sense to me because that manual is totally different from mine. I must also admit that although that video was extremely helpful and relevant and I learned a lot, the interior of both of those units was slightly different than my freedom 10. It seems apparent that during the buyout/transition things were the same then similar and maybe now not the same at all? Either way I see both of your points, that they are the same and also not the same at all lol. now lets get back together and fix my **** problem LOL

Added after writing everything else below: I get it now. There are 2 version of the Freedom line. The video I linked to is the new version, and Mr. Wizard is thinking landlordy has the old version.

I have to say I'm totally confused over the Freedom Combi vs. Freedom 10/20/etc. model names. Looking at the manual downloaded from

it says the Freedom Combi is a Freedom 10, 15, 20, or 25. Then looking at the Heart Interface manual from

its picture looks identical to one of the Freedom Combi pictures in the Xantrex manual.

In trying to reconcile all of this, I concluded that "Freedom Combi" is a product line that has 4 different models, the 10, 15, 20, and 25. Very confusing on Heart's and/or Xantrex's part. Maybe somewhere along the line Heart or Xantrex did a cost reduction with the internals but kept the case the same?

landlordy-If you go with the external transfer switch, verify that the charger part still works. If the control board is the culprit cutting off the transfer relay, it could be cutting off the charger, too. By the way, I'm thinking you should change your forum ID to freedom-depot. I have a few wfco converters piled up, but you're quickly surpassing my stash.

the Freedom-10 with NO remote has an idle of approx 90ma
with remote about 180ma

thats less than the tripplite inverter i'm using now

the freedom-10 is not a xantrex inverter
it was mfg when the company was still "Heart Interface" before it was bought out
the freedom Combi is possibly the last design of the old 'Heart' company
the 458 is a copy of the Combi, just about everything since then is a more recent design by different engineers and mfg over seas

xantrex is not 'Heart' basically they bought the company then changed everything
to my knowledge IF i have it right
the Heart engineers then left and founded 'Magnum'

I run an AIMS Power 2000 watt PSW inverter and mine is as close to the battery bank as I can get it without it being in the battery box itself, it's maybe a foot away. I used neoprene jacketed stranded welding cable bought by the foot at the local welding supply store, cut back the insulation, tinned the ends and crimped on solid copper TECO lugs with a inline 100amp lug fuse on the positive feed. (my 110 power needs aren't that great). I prefer perked coffee in my stainless Cabelas percolator. No Keurig here...lol All I run is my CPAP machine and maybe charge my FRS radio's.

The AIMS power PSW like the Xantrex comes with a remote on-off module (real nice) but unlike the Xantrex, the idle current is extremely low, couple milliamps. Just enough to excite the capacitors. In fact, I often times forget to turn mine off when I'm not using it.

the RV is a 1995 Safari, the F-10 date code sticker is 0895, Aug 1995 ? or week 8 1995, which would be Feb 1995

I 'assume' LL F10 and F20 look similar to this and NOT the freedom combi or the xantrex 458
he will have to comment, maybe his does not look like this
but the manual he posted is for this one, not the 458
different boards, different circuits than the 458/combi

Man road runner you are the master at finding useful vids and threads. That was a great video. I like the idea of an external transfer switch and may even consider it if I don't solve this soon. That would actually solve my problem right now it seems? I had to work today but I am going to tinker a bit more tomorrow! I feel like I can swap these units now in about 10 minutes flat, it's amazing how much I have learned.

landlordy-I've never had a freedom-whatever so can't give any specific help. Just a general comment on the transfer relays. I have a prosine 2.0 that also has a transfer relay. Before I installed it I read a lot of posts about transfer relay problems in the prosine. It sounded like it's not a question of "if", just "when". This scared me enough that I added an external manual transfer switch, and I don't use the prosine's AC output when plugged into shore power. I can imagine that air conditioners, microwaves, and water heaters must be pretty hard on those relays.

Just an Info note:

the xantrex freedom 458
is not the same thing as the heart interface freedom 10

they are different devices ,in build and quality

xantrex bought 'heart interface' then used the freedom model branding on cheaper built units

a few years back 'maybe 10' there were some posts on here about failing 458 inverters
if i remember right, if it failed during warranty xantrex just replaced it with another one, after warranty NO repair or parts,

anything about fuses etc in a 458 has nothing in common with a an F-10 etc 'HEART' inverter

i would not own a xantrex 458

Let me know mr wizard when this is all said and done id be glad to send you any part you need if I have it. Lord knows you been helping me out. I got so lucky because this guy only listed the control panel in the ad and just mentioned about the free inverter so I asked him,. Could not believe when he said freedom 10. Now im just waiting for a tracking number again lol!

I am glad you are getting a deal on these old items.

If you start paying new prices I recommend getting separate components to simplify issues in the future.

Separate transfer switch, separate converter for battery charging, separate inverter to produce power on demand. Cross charging management, automatic inverter, load support are all great until something goes haywire.
