Batteries are not built the same and some are much better than others. With cheap batteries deep discharges will often warp plates causing them to not hold a charge afterward but better constructed batteries use batter materials to insulate the plates (for example) and will stand up to more abuse. You're certainly not going to be OUT anything by charging them up and see if they'll return to service or not. I'd never toss them out without trying. Even with very well built batteries however, you can expect that their life expectancy will likely be shorter than it would have been.
