Aggressive charging does shorten plate life but sulfation reduces capacity and battery life too. My "learner set" of 6v batteries died an early death because the 13.8v converter could not get their SGs up no matter how long they had. Following that US Battery guide with the 1093 which has the necessary voltages is keeping my replacement 6s in great shape since early 2011 now.
By that, I mean they have as new capacity, their SGs are as new and equal, even if their plates are getting worn with usage. Batteries are a consumable item no matter what you do. I prefer to have full capacity the whole time they last rather than limp along at reduced capacity for a couple years before they quit entirely.
