Jack will not fully retract

I have one rear jack that will not fully retract on my class A RV. I have coated the extended shaft heavly with transmission fluid to no avail. Shaft seem straight and others go up quickly. I can force it up completely with a pry bar

Anyone else have a DIY solution to this problem. It worked last year but very slowly.

Thanks

  • I had the same problem, tried to lube it, opened the solenoid valves, etc. and still had to pry it up. Finally broke down a few weeks ago and replaced it and now it is the fastest jack to retract that I have.
  • Several years ago I had problems with my left rear HWH jack retracting without help, new springs had been installed prior to that trip. We were near the HWH factory so we stopped in without an appointment for them to check out the problem. A few hours later, we were on our way with a rebuilt jack installed by the factory technicians. Warranty was long expired but the total cost was reasonable and the problem was resolved.

IF HWH and you have to force it up with a pry bar, the ONLY fix is to rebuild it or replace it. Doug

  • Since you have an HR, I'm going to assume you have the HWH system like I have.

On the pump you'll see four valves, each with a handle Make sure all four are open. This allows the fluid to flow back to the pump just from the pressure of the springs, like Brett said.

I have sprayed my jacks with silicone spray as I suspect the rubber seals are getting old at 23 years. That seemed to help. My springs are all original.

Finally, I changed the fluid in the tank just to make sure no foreign junk was causing a problem. My system uses MD 3, the transmission fluid. I think it was less than a gallon.
  • I had one similar to that, finally chattered a bit, then froze down. had to remove it and rebuild it. I too used a crow bar/length of 2 x 4 etc. to get it up. get it fixed before you get stranded. if you want to put on a new spring, I can PM you how to do it easily, not with levers/spacers/etc. which people here seem to think it is the way to do it.

  • What brand?

I know HWH had some with weak springs. Replacing the springs fixed it-- not a difficult job.
