K&N air filter

Fifty years of business selling to all those gullible people, who just keep coming out of the woodworks. You'd think they'd learn after 50 years. But could it be that there are 50 years of satisfied owners? Nah, just gullible. :)

Marketing ...maybe.

Who cares about air flow, you buy a filter to filter the dirt out. How about K&N testing how much dirt their air filter doesn't trap? It's job is to filter. I never run my motor at an rpm that air flow is insufficient. Usually far from red line.

Gee, I guess marketing and advertising are worth what you pay for them too? Nothing at all, but product puffery. I can't think of a single application for a car that needs a K&N air filter. Not a single person that has a K&N air filter has ever sent it into the lab for testing, so see how much dirt it does NOT filter out.

They should be called K&N Sieves. Hold one up to the sun, and see how much daylight comes through the pores. To HOW many microns filtration does a K&N catch 99% of the dirt, dust and debris? Compare that to a paper air filter. There is no comparison.

I find K&N filters for people not willing to validate their claims, until product life failure, and failure analysis. They have blind faith in marketing and advertising. I believe the term is "gullible"?

I recall that report from some years ago about stock filters doing just as well as the K&N. I did a bit of research when I bought my first diesel and determined the stock Ford filter is very good and K&N can't improve on it.

I've yet to see one shred of proof that use of a K&N filter toasted an engine before the life of the vehicle was done. The body of the vehicle will rust away long before the engine dies from use of a K&N filter.

On the flip side with today's computer controlled emissions systems, there is no gain in using one unless you get a tune.

Bottom line, stick with the regular paper filters that the engine and PCM programming was designed to work with.

I know some people who have used K&N and have not had any major engine failures. I still wouldn't buy a vehicle that had one installed because of the potential issues I've read about (and not just on this forum). That being said, everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion and can do whatever they want to their vehicles.

For the folks who claim 200-300k miles out of their engines on a K&N, so what? I've never traded in a vehicle with less than 200k, and I've never usedK&N.

Looking at the responses shows those that have actual experience with the product have no issues with it but those that have never used the product are against it.
Sound familiar ??

I installed a K&N OEM type filter on a '90 chevy 5.7 2500 truck when the truck was new. The truck towed doubles for eight years. Ran the K&N for 235k miles. Zero issues with the 5.7 engine.
Gave the truck to my youngest grandson. He ran the odo up to 255k miles and sold it to a 16 year old kid in the same small town.
Anyways fast forward to present..... the old truck now has 312k miles and no one has ever had the oil pan/valve covers off.
