K&N air filter

K&N Filter alone does very little performance if any, what you really need is a well tuned cold air intake with the K&N filter than you can see some HP increase..

I wouldn't have one. More air flow means less filtering and that means dirt in the engine/intake.

my choice is to maximizes filtering efficiency of any particulates even at the expense of filter life and restriction. So, I choose the factory OEM filter for my diesel since valid testing show it offers the maximum filtering, and still beats some others in life and restriction.

by towing a 35ft almost 10,000 lb trailer by default I've already made the decision that fuel economy is NOT important!:)

To each his own. Pick what you want to trade off, find what meets that requirement.

IF I were considering purchasing a K&N I would certainly check out their website. HOWEVER, it is NOT a place to get an UNBIASED opinion of their product, which is what I said in my post. Of course they're going to say their filters will give you more hp, more mpg, etc, just like the fuel line magnet and the tornado fuel saver manufacturers claimed. They weren't unbiased either.

Distilled down to the bare essence of what a $75 K&N oiled air "filter" is. An oily cotton rag.

As far as fuel economy claims go, no air filter can improve that because right behind the air filter is the Mass Airflow Sensor. The fuel injection is then set to deliver the optimal 14.7 to 1 ratio based on the airflow. You can completely remove the air filter with no increase in economy.

The air cleaner can limit peak performance by acting as a sort of throttle, limiting airflow. However, the engineers have already designed everything around the limiting factor, usually the engine valve system. There isn't much margin left to exploit in either the intake or exhaust.

With the competition to produce the most powerful and economic vehicles, can you imagine an engineer overlooking the air cleaner for additional performance? Not a chance. If that's all it takes to improve performance, even a tiny amount, they'll install it and claim they're better than the other guy.

There are applications where an oily cotton rag makes a good air cleaner, such as motorcycles, lawn mowers, etc., where high airflow in a compact area is needed, and routine maintenance is not a concern.
