Kwikee Step retraction

Hello RV friends, My steps don't retract or extend automatically when the engine is running or ignition on. It only retracts and extends if the step switch is on. According to the step manual, the step should always retract or extend if engine is started for safety reasons, even if the switch is off in the extended position
Any idea's what I should be looking for to solve this? Thanks.....
  • Thank you cgmartine. This makes sense. Will check this before next trip. Thanks....
  • The instructions for testing the yellow wire with a volt meter state that the volts reading should be approximately 12 volts when the ignition is on and zero volts when ignition is off. The yellow wire is one of the four wires on the 4-way connector. If the reading is zero when the ignition is on, check all terminal connections, wiring, and the vehicle's ignition fuse.
  • Doug: I think your answer makes the most sense. The yellow wire. The problem began in early summer this year. It worked correctly when we were in Florida in February. When I winterize the coach, I shall make fixing this a priority. Thanks...
  • broken corroded missing, connection between ignition and step control

IDK the wiring color codes for the step,

I would follow dougs advice and look for the yellow wire and follow that circuit back, looking for ignition connection problem
  • 1. The entry door is NOT closed when you attempt to use the ignition override.
    2. There is a YELLOW wire on the step harness. THAT wire goes to the Ignition side of the Key. IF that wire is dead (Fuse probably blown) the Ignition override will not work. Doug
  • Did you call the manufacturer and talk to their tech support people? They will be the most likely to diagnose the problem.
