kwikee steps

model number is 903209100. in a 2006 Itasca MH
when the MH plugged was plugged into the shop they worked fine.
with a little beating from the tech they reluctantly worked sometimes.
I thought it might be the battery - the starter battery reads 12.5 and with the motor running 14.5V that must be enough.

does anyone know where the plug/socket connection is so I can see if it is corroded?
being old I have difficulty getting under there so ony want to go once!

tech says the motor has a flat spot.
50 years ago motors had solid carbon brushes touching the copper bits of the rotor. are they still built that way?
thanks all

  • Take the motor to your auto parts store. Many are Ford window regulator motors.
  • UHOH! a new motor is cdn$150!
    including shipping and duties
    thanks all
  • anon125, there are a lot of posts in the archives on the easy way to remove the clevis pin. In my opinion the easiest, because if you do it this way, it makes it easier to replace the motor, is to remove the entire motor and gearbox assembly and then remove the cotter key and clevis pin. There are only four 1/4" - 20 nuts and lock washers involved. First thing to do is to strap or clamp the steps if in the retracted position, disconnect the two wire motor connector then remove the nuts and washers and the entire assemble will be hanging by the linkage and the pin removal then becomes very easy.

Move the entire assembly to you work bench and then replace motor and reinstall.

The cheapest place to purchase the motor is from the maker, AM Equipment in Oregon. Look at past posts for exact name and telephone number.
  • If you're going to replace that motor, read this thread where I worked on my steps:

In the 7th post of that thread, dougrainer gives some very valuable advice on relieving the tension on that linkage pin.

  • If you beat/tap on a Kwikee motor and it operates, it has a dead spot. Replace the motor. THAT is how I test Kwikee steps. If I tap on the motor and it works I replace the motor. Doug
  • MAKE SURE YOU STAY CLEAR OF THE STEP! Good advice!!
    thanks all
  • The plug is under the step adjacent to the control box and motor.
Sounds more like a ground issue which is common. There should be two grounds. Locate them, disconnect them from the attachment to the frame or body. Clean connection good and re-attach. MAKE SURE YOU STAY CLEAR OF THE STEP!
As stated by previous post, disconnect linkage, make sure step moves freely. Good time to service! Clean pivot points with a strong cleaner, something like Brake Clean works. Then use a good quality grease. Chain lube works.
  • Check and see if the step is binding ... disconnect the cotter pin which hold the motor to step .. step should swing smoothly. With the step disconnected then try and energize the motor and see if that operates properly. Most step issues are power related and many of those are based on low battery or corroded ground wire (ground wire being a popular culprit).
