ladder question

Does anyone know if the nuts (or other mechanism) which hold the bolts into the fiberglass body are stationary? I believe one of my bolts is broken (by me overtightening! Aaargh!), and I would like to replace it, but don't know if the nut on the backside will drop off when bolt is backed out. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks much!

  • Thanks for the input, everyone. Seems like I got everything tightened up pretty well, so maybe there's not a problem. I'll keep an eye on it and see how it goes. Thanks again!
  • I quit trusting my ladder with my old, 205#. Removed it, sealed the holes and bought a portable, telescoping ladder on the net for about $75. Feel much safer with it.
  • NUT-SERT captive nuts are useful when the hole that held the old nut has not been gouged out.

Yes, sorry, that's what I'm asking. Is the mechanism, assuming nuts, behind the fiberglass stationary? Can I just change out the bolts, or will the nuts shift? Thanks for your response.

I have loosened the screws holding the ladder attachment brackets on my FW in profile. I did not take them all the way out, as I was just sealing them. They just seemed to be a sheet metal screw, that I am hoping most were turned into the aluminum framing, not just through the fiberglass.

You would really have to tighten to break the screw. I would think more likely, whatever the screw is fastened to, stripped. Even though my FW has a six sided aluminum cage, I'm guessing not every screw in the ladder brackets hit the framing.

I would remove the one you think may be broken, and go from there. If it is broken or stripped, it is not holding anything anyway.

  • If you are talking about the bolts in the standoff, the nuts are fastened to the round tube of the ladder, and will not fall off if you remove the screw.

You may need to give a better description. I don't think the screws into the fiberglass, would have nuts behind them.
