Landing Gear Motor works out, but not when in place

I had a different thread about this issue a few months back. But the motor started working. Now it's quit again and I'm in a position to take it all apart. When I unbolt the motor from gearbox/whatever it works fine. But when it's bolted in place it won't work.

Any suggestions? Is it the motor that's too weak now? Is that even possible?

  • I ordered a new motor from Vanguard Mfg. I talked to a very helpful person in Customer Sevice by the name of Pam. She took my order and then sent me a page of advice and 14 PDF's on maintenance, installation and conversion to a two motor system. I'm impressed.

I'm tempted to go with the two motor setup. My toy hauler is nose heavy and it would help that puny single motor.

BTW I can unbolt the motor from the gearbox and it works perfectly. I talked to a few local RV shops and they all said the same thing as donn0128, bad motor. It is 7 years old so maybe it's time.
  • You may want to check your switch. I had one that corroded and one wire fell off the switch.
  • bad motor they are pretty cheap so order a new one direct from the landing gear mfg
  • I can hand crank the gear up and down. I'm plugged into shore power. I can hook my volt meter all along the cable to the switch, and back to the motor. It's 13 volts at each point I check.
  • What comes to mind here is:
    Is there sufficient battery power?
Is the gear box running free...can you move it by hand?
Is there a binding in the shaft gears or teeth missing?
