Lazy converter?

Just got back from a recent trip and while I was plugged in at the camp spot, the converter was acting odd.

I have a voltage gauge inside which lets me know how the house batteries are doing while dry camping. When I'm plugged into AC that gauge will read 14.3 volts and eventually (depending on battery charge) will idle down to 13.7 volts and remain as long as I'm plugged in. But this time I would notice that on occasion when I started using more electrical devices (lights, fans, etc...), the gauge would start reading 13.3 and lower like I was no longer plugged in. Clearly NOT doing its normal thing. In fear that the batteries would be drained, I reached down and reset the converter breaker and it would jump back up to 14.3. I tightened up all the electrical connections just to be sure nothing was loose and possibly the reason.

I went through watching the voltage gauge fairly closely for a couple times over two days and then decided to see what would happen if I just left it alone. Knowing that it was doing the same thing, I could tell the lights were dimmer for a short while and then everything would brighten up as it seemed the converter was running normal.

Is this something I should be concerned with? Is it just normal converter actions? Could it potentially be related to the batteries in any way? Is there something I should be looking for?

Also, this is a WFCO 55 amp converter. Thanks for the help or advice.

    Do a search on "WFCO" here and read up. You'll find out they are cheap chinese junk.

    My suggestion is to forget about the WFCO, just don't waste your time doing any more research work with it, replace it now. Because sooner or later it will fail on you and leave you in a bad pinch without electricity when you really do need electricity, and then you'll be out in the boonies and have to pay extortion prices and full pop for a replacement Progressive Dynamics or Iota. Better to have it replaced now, and save yourself the research and headaches on a future trip. Buy a unit on Ebay for a good price instead.

    Failure of WFCO's is a common occurence, it's a known lack of quality. Plenty of people have been down this road before, ahead of you.

    Thank you again everyone. I'm going to check out everything today and see what I find out. Just pointing out though that now home and plugged into power here, the converter is working fine. I know that doesn't prove there isn't an issue with it too.....

    Dam few !!!
    I think this forum takes a perdy accurate poll on converter failure,
    Last count I believe was WFCO at 75%, and PD at 3%.

    You can replace your WFCO, or you can wait and replace your WFCO. But that is a common failure mode for the unit you describe. In the mean time, you're killing your batteries.

    What you describe is a common failure mode for many different make / models of converters. Yes even the highly acclaimed PD series fails the very same way.

    Converters when failing typically output the proper voltage with no load, but when a load is applied even a small 1 or 2 amp load the voltage drops below the configured float voltage. It's really easy to check if it's the converter or the battery. Remove the converter to battery connection measure the converter output voltage - then connect a partially discharged battery or some 12 Vdc loads (try to draw at least several amps from the converter)then measure again the converter leads. If the voltage drops below the configured float voltage by several volts the converter is dying.

    This is a simplified block diagram of the typical 30A Electrical Configuration used in the RV's.



    The heart of things is the 120VAC and 12VDC Distribution panels. The converter only uses 120VAC to produce 13.6VDC which will feed the 12V Distribution Panel to operate you 12VDC Appliances and things from the shore power connection or generator. The convert is also your battery charger when connected to shore power. You can note the the battery also feeds the same point on the 12VDC Distribution Panel. This is how the battery operates all of your 12V appliances and thing when not connected to shore power or generator.

    Alot of batteries will boil out their fluids resulting in internal core shorts when being used with WFCO products. You really have to keep any eye on them and make sure they have their normal level of battery fluids.

    You will need to determine what happened first Bad battery causing the converter to response funny or the converter going bad to cause the strange things you are seeing on the 12VDC Monitor meter. Most failures of this nature are usually the battery being boiled out of its fluids first which was caused by the converter/charger always putting out 13.6VDC for long extended times and not checking the fluid levels. Once shorted out then the CONVERTER/CHARGER tries to resolve the shorted cell when charging the batteries and does strange things when connected to shore power or generator.

    If you disconnect the converter 12VDC DC output leads the converter should just sit there producing a level 13.6VDC output when being fed by the shore power connection or generator. The batteries not connected to anything should read 12.6-7VDC if fully charged. A shorted cell in a battery will cause the battery to typically read around 5-6VDC on the battery terminals and the case will be hot to touch and smell bad. The shorted cell will be dry of fluids. This battery must be removed from the system as continuing to try to make it recover "COULD" result in the battery exploding...

    In the end New batteries and a replacement PD9260C Converter/charger should fix you up... in Hindsight constant inspection of the batteries would have prevented this from happening but most of us replaced the WFCO converter/charger products with PD or IOTA replacements early on. My WF8945 Converter/charger got replaced just after 4 months of use when I purchased my new trailer in 2008 and lost one of deep cycle batteries due to no fluids inside it. The remaining batteries have been good ever since then and still going today. They are just now starting to show loss of performance slightly (not holding charge like they did when new) when camping off the power grid. I do the 50% to 90% charge states every day when camping off the power grid.

    Why wouldn't it? Your 120V supply from the campground or the generator goes into the converter—it doesn't come out of it. The 120V supply was fine, so the 120V things (other than the ailing converter) worked as they were supposed to.

    Nothing funny (strange) about that.........110V AC system is upstream of converter which provides DC power.
    Converter is failing.

    Check each battery cell specific gravity and have it load tested.

    Then shop for new converter

    I appreciate the input. Yes, I have the converter inlet vented to the outside and it runs very cool. At the moment I'm just going to chalk this up and see what continues. If it acts up more and causes battery problems then I guess I'll be shopping for a replacement. I just didn't know if battery condition could affect the way the converter acts. I dont care to replace a converter only to find that a bad battery was the real culprit.

    Just for drill if this is feasible, room and access-wise, try to ventilate the area of the converter charger. If playing a fan on the converter makes it misbehave less often the that's pretty much a bullet-proof condemnation of the converter. Access-wise, good luck. Sounds like a Progressive Dynamics is in your future.

I have a voltage gauge inside which lets me know how the house batteries are doing while dry camping. When I'm plugged into AC that gauge will read 14.3 volts and eventually (depending on battery charge) will idle down to 13.7 volts and remain as long as I'm plugged in. But this time I would notice that on occasion when I started using more electrical devices (lights, fans, etc...), the gauge would start reading 13.3 and lower like I was no longer plugged in. Clearly NOT doing its normal thing. In fear that the batteries would be drained, I reached down and reset the converter breaker and it would jump back up to 14.3. I tightened up all the electrical connections just to be sure nothing was loose and possibly the reason.

I went through watching the voltage gauge fairly closely for a couple times over two days and then decided to see what would happen if I just left it alone. Knowing that it was doing the same thing, I could tell the lights were dimmer for a short while and then everything would brighten up as it seemed the converter was running normal.

Is this something I should be concerned with? Is it just normal converter actions? Could it potentially be related to the batteries in any way? Is there something I should be looking for?

Better to have it replaced now, and save yourself the research and headaches on a future trip. Buy a unit on Ebay for a good price instead.

The converter only uses 120VAC to produce 13.6VDC which will feed the 12V Distribution Panel to operate you 12VDC Appliances and things from the shore power connection or generator. The convert is also your battery charger when connected to shore power. You can note the the battery also feeds the same point on the 12VDC Distribution Panel. This is how the battery operates all of your 12V appliances and thing when not connected to shore power or generator.

Alot of batteries will boil out their fluids resulting in internal core shorts when being used with WFCO products. You really have to keep any eye on them and make sure they have their normal level of battery fluids.

You will need to determine what happened first Bad battery causing the converter to response funny or the converter going bad to cause the strange things you are seeing on the 12VDC Monitor meter. Most failures of this nature are usually the battery being boiled out of its fluids first which was caused by the converter/charger always putting out 13.6VDC for long extended times and not checking the fluid levels. Once shorted out then the CONVERTER/CHARGER tries to resolve the shorted cell when charging the batteries and does strange things when connected to shore power or generator.

If you disconnect the converter 12VDC DC output leads the converter should just sit there producing a level 13.6VDC output when being fed by the shore power connection or generator. The batteries not connected to anything should read 12.6-7VDC if fully charged. In the end New batteries and a replacement PD9260C Converter/charger should fix you up... in Hindsight constant inspection of the batteries would have prevented this from happening but most of us replaced the WFCO converter/charger products with PD or IOTA replacements early on. My WF8945 Converter/charger got replaced just after 4 months of use when I purchased my new trailer in 2008 and lost one of deep cycle batteries due to no fluids inside it. The remaining batteries have been good ever since then and still going today. They are just now starting to show loss of performance slightly (not holding charge like they did when new) when camping off the power grid. I do the 50% to 90% charge states every day when camping off the power grid.

Yes, I have the converter inlet vented to the outside and it runs very cool. At the moment I'm just going to chalk this up and see what continues. If it acts up more and causes battery problems then I guess I'll be shopping for a replacement. I just didn't know if battery condition could affect the way the converter acts.
