Location of Temerature Seneor on 1997 Allison World Trans

Well I'm leaving today to go racing at summit MotorSports Park in Norwalk.

Haven't left yet and the Motor Home is fighting me again.

I believe I have an issue with the temperature gauge for the transmission.

This is the gauge with the key off, note the position of the needles on both the transmission and coolant temperature gauges.

Now note the position of the needles on both the transmission and coolant temperature gauges with the key on (engine has not been running).

In both cases the transmission gauge reads quite a bit higher than the coolant temperature gauge.

I believe the gauge has gone bad on me.

To be safe I would like to know the location of the temperature sending unit on the transmission (1997 Allison World Transmission).

If it is the sending unit and the ECU on the transmission throws a code or puts the transmission in a limp home mode I would like to be ready to disconnect the sending unit.

Can you help, a picture would be outstanding.

Thanks

My guess, you will find the sensor clipped to one of the cooling lines. That is the common place for it.

I found it on the coolant line out of the transmission to the transmission oil cooler.

I removed the wire and cycled the ignition key and the gauge did not move, with it disconnected it should think it is very cold.

I shorted it to the chassis and cycled the key and needle in the gauge started to move all the way across the gauge.

Turned the key off and the needle stayed high.

I reconnected the wire to the sensor and the gauge reads 180 degrees with the key on.

I believe it is the gauge.
