a REAL hardware store. maybe a big box store, but my local ACE hardware has literally hundreds of left hand thread hardware in fractional and metric sizes, along with things like "elevator bolts", (yes there is such a thing), kep nuts, tinnerman nut assortments, other captive nuts, external torx, stainless and grade 8 hardware and all kinds of uncommon hardware. Literally five 30 ft long floor to ceiling aisles of nuts, bolts and fasteners. Want a box, they have them, want only 1, that as well.
The ACE hardware store/s in my area wouldn't come anywhere close to that selection!..:(
Have a Fastenal store close by - that does well with unusual hardware, and the employees are very helpful for ordering unusual stuff.
If you *don't* have a brick and mortar store that can help - lots of choices (as others have indicated) on the web.
Google(ing) - "Left-handed fasteners" - will list lots of suppliers.
~ - wa8yxmExplorer IIIThere are 3 kinds of stores that carry SCREWS and several that cary (Begain smaller font) screws( reeturen to normal font).
One such company that carries SCREWS is Tradsman Fastener in Redford MI (on 5 Mile Rd) and you will find many other stores like them across the nation,, They are Fastener stores, They specialize in nuts, bolts, and the things that go with them (Drills, wrenches, and so on). Just tell 'em "Left handed" and they should have it. Likely in stock.
I used to have a friend who worked at Tradsman back when it was C&J Fastener, He always have a few screws loose.... (Take that either way.. many of my friends have a few screws loose after all.. Even RVers often have a few screws loose.,,,, The kind of screws you tighten with a screwdriver that is). - There is left handed threads used on many hand type tools to keep chucks in place on drills and for saw blade retainers.

Left-handed threads are common on many wheel applications, where the normal tougue would tend to loosen a right-hand thread. Examples are the pedals on a bicycle. one side is left-handed. As I have not changed a tire myself in many years, I do not know about modern cars, But in my day, auto wheel studs were left-handed on one side. If you didn't know that, you could work for days trying to change a wheel.
Chrysler was the last to abandon the LH thread on one side, RH on the other side. Sometime in the 1970's.
But it did mess up lots of folks trying to work on the cars. - filthy_beastExplorer

Some hw stores have good metric selection.. Never been to one that has good metric selection with left hand threads.
come visit our area. there are several ace stores within a 10 mile radius with metric LH threads, even LH stainless metric, along with ALL kinds of hardware.
Our favorite opens at 6am, has trucks in the lot with service guys waiting to get in to get the days needs for strange hardware.
BTW, their prices on most everything beats the big box stores as well.
I feel lucky. AND the staff is extremely knowledgeable as well. Many of the staff have been their for 20 years or more.
WOW! Sounds like my kind of place, I always stop at all the out of the way hardware stores while we are on vacation and drive my wife crazy :E
If you can, please post the address and phone number, I have been to Portland many times and would love to check it out the next time I am there. Guess I will have to leave the wife at the mall :B - ktmrfsExplorer II

You are very fortunate!
We used to have hardware stores like that. The big box stores ran them all out of business. Even the industrial suppliers do not have the selection like they used to. That is why I gave up driving all over town to find special fasteners. I just order from McMASTER-CARR and it is on my doorstep the next day. BTW they have "Elevator Bolts" too :B
Like I say, you are lucky, I wish I had a place like that too :)
