LP Generator and extra tank (Solved)

I have an LP gen and want a kit so I can hook up and extra tank to my system and preserve the frame tank. I have seen kits to use with a BBQ but I don't want that.
I will carry a 30# reserve tank with me.
Any ideas?
  • After looking at my system I think the best way is to add a "T" after the regulator, as cmeade suggested, and put a separate regulator and a valve in the line on the 30# tank.
That way I can remove the 30# and refill and still have the frame tank available.
I have a 22 gallon frame tank----how does that relate to pounds?

    PS, I found my answer.

  • Thanks everyone.
cmeade, your idea will work but I must have a closer look at my system. I just want one regulator and be able to switch back and forth. I know I would need a high pressure line to go from 30# tank to regulator and I would have to have two shut off valves installed.
    Thanks, Marvin
  • If you are determined to have it your way then install a T fitting with cap and shutoff valve at genny to supply line. Regulator would be attached at portable tank because your 30# tank is unregulated. You would then have a propane hose from 30# tank and regulator to T fitting to genny with shutoff switch "off". Cap the T fitting and turn shutoff valve "on" and frame tank now supplying.
  • If your generator is already plumbed into the frame tank I don't believe I would monkey with it. I would just get an extend a stay and hook it to your frame tank. It would probably be less work.
