LP Regulator Replacement

Folks, I need some guidance. During a recent camping trip I detected a harmonic sound coming from my propane regulator, a Marshall Gas Products #605M (automatic changeover). When I flipped the selector lever to the second tank, the sound went away. Both tanks were almost full. The next day I returned the lever to its original position. There was no more sound and I haven't heard it since.

On the trip home I stopped at Camping World and asked about the noise and was told the diaphragm was wearing out and that I should replace the regulator soon. The sales guy suggested a Mr. Heater model F273766 regulator as a replacement (for $57 plus tax). Have any one of you had an experience like this, with a "singing" regulator? Was it really going bad?

My dilemma is that I don't care to buy products made offshore unless absolutely necessary and as I remember, the Mr. Heater regulator is not U.S.-made. In addition, I would prefer to replace my regulator with another Marshall unit, but can't seem to find the 605M online. Neither can I find any type of cross-reference chart. I want to be sure that the regulator I install will have the capacity to feed all the appliances in my 5er (water heater, fridge, stove, furnace). Might any of you be able to tell me what regulator I need, or if I even do need one?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
  • Marshall has gone out of business. The only US made auto changeover regulator is the RegO 7525B23 it also has a ten year warranty. Contact your local LP Gas Dealer to buy. Regulator harmonic's happen sometimes and for no apparent reason. You can usually tweak the setting or loosen the cap and they will stop. If that doesn't help replace it.
    Good Luck
  • I have had a small propane smell in my propane compartment for some time. I have leak checked all of the fittings more times than I can remember. Yesterday flow stopped from one tank even though it wasn't empty and it would not switch over to the completely full tank even manually. I switched the full tank to the side of the regulator that was working and propane flowed. I also moved the hose from the side of the regulator that wouldn't flow to the flow side and it worked.

The fact that I have had a small propane smell for some time, one side of the regulator won't flow and the "good side" stops flow before the selected tank is empty - replacing the regulator today.

    It is a Marshall #250.

Full time use for 4 years.
  • Thanks for the quick response Old Biscuit.

There has been a very slight smell of propane in the cylinder compartment. Spraying leak detector on all the fittings did not indicate any leakage. Perhaps the first-stage vent is the source of the smell. I think the regulator should be replaced anyway. Do you agree?
  • The Marshall Model 254 auto changeover 2 stage.
    210,000BTU capacity........approx. $38

Pulsating/chattering can be due to low demand, debris on disc/seat or clogging vent.
Swapping to other cylinder cleared the issue (valving out the cylinder and then slowly valving it back in probably would have worked also).

If regulator is maintaining proper pressure/flow, if no excessive smell of propane from vents (1st stage has a very small pin hole vent...2nd stage is larger/screened vent).....then why replace?
