Magic Chef stove

Hello fellow campers. I'm not actually a camper. I live in an older rv that doesn't go anywhere. Works for me! Anyway, I have a Magic Chef stove (older) and when I turn the oven on to bake the temperature gets and remains extremely HOT. I noticed that the tip of the oven pilot is bright red like on fire. I've looked through the parts book and believe it's the oven pilot that needs replacing but then again there's the thermocoupler as well. If anyone might have any further information that would be useful in helping me determine what needs replacing, I would be ever so greatful. Appreciate any and all comments. Thank You, Marilyn

  • Your description of the pilot light situation sounds perfectly normal to me. The pilot flame would be a nearly invisible blue flame, the red bit is the tip of the thermocouple heated to normal glowing red hot temperature by the pilot flame.

If the oven is only hot when you attempt to bake something, I see two possibilities: (1) you have accidentally set the oven to "broil" or (2) the thermostat has failed in the burner-on position. The cure for the first is obvious; the cure for the second is thermostat replacement. Either way, there is nothing wrong with either the pilot light or the thermocouple. (BTW, the latter is a fail-safe, and if it needed replacement, you would get no heat at all.)

I think the OP is a newbie hit and run as they haven't come back since the original post.

  • so I am just trying to understand what the problem is here, sounds like everything is working properly to me.  are you saying it gets to hot for baking?  or that it won't shut off the main burner?  maybe buy a cheep oven thermometer and place it in to see what the temp actually is.

the tip of the thermocouple is supposed to get bright red, if it wasn't working then your oven pilot wouldn't stay on.
