WHy do you need to cook the batteries so much? They must be boiling away? I use solar when dry camping with two Trojans t-125's and have yet to have a need to pump so much into the batteries. I also use a 3000i but charge regularly through the house charger
It doesn't cook the batteries. Amps taper as battery acceptance dictates during the recharge.
Everyone has his own camping style that keeps him happy. Some take pride in using as little battery as possible, while we are the opposite of that. So we are equipped for our style. Nobody has a better style than the next guy. It is only bad if you are not equipped for your own style. In that case, this forum is the place to be so you can get organized. :)
We use the inverter a lot and rack up the daily AH usage. No attempt to conserve battery. Our idea is to use it, since we have it. We have it, because that's what we need. :)
I prefer short as possible gen times (two hours is about it) for battery recharging, going as long as possible between gen times. Days and days with no gen needed is good. (Can be bad for the batts though if they never get to full--which happens a lot with solar only where many days you get to almost full, but not quite, before dark)
In the OP case, starting at 226AH down and that 172 amps, it was tapered to 100 amps after one hour and down 120AH. At two hours I stopped with amps at 29 and down 32AH. That was more than a 50-90 but daytime for solar was running out so needed more gen time. That was only the second time I used the gen this summer. We had lots of sun this year.
