Maxair fan demise?

We have a maxair fan up over the bed. Recently it stopped working while turned on. I turned it off and removed the fuse. It was hot enough to burn my fingers. I took down the screen and tried to spin it by hand and it spins easily. I cleaned the screen and replaced it and put the fuse back in - same thing. It runs for a minute or so and then slows and stops. Then I discovered that if I hold the black fuse cap all the way up all is good. It works fine, but when I let go the fuse comes out about 1/8" against a spring and slows and stops along with heating up the fuse.

I can't see any way to replace the fuseholder. Can I just put a little ball of aluminum foil in the cap so the fuse fits tighter? I think that would work but would it be safe?

It is the correct 4A fuse. This is original to the rig and never a problem before.

Are you positive it is a Maxxair vent and NOT just a Maxxair top cover? I just looked up the parts for the various Maxxairs and they show NO 12 volt fuse in the vent. FANTASTIC roof vents have that type fuse. Doug

I don't believe it! :B I am going out on a limb here by saying that I just might, maybe, have found Doug to be in error. I just checked with my Maxxfan, three speed, bi directional fan with an 8A slow blow fuse.

I don't know the model number but it was installed I think in 2008. I would be pleased to post a photo.
  • Thanks to all who chimed in. It is, in fact, a Fantastic Vent. I talked to them a few minutes ago and while they said they couldn't tell me to put the aluminum foil in, they could give me the part number for the fuseholder. I proceeded to put a tiny ball of foil in the cap to make the fuse i little bit "longer" and it works fine. I will order a new fuseholder and replace it.

AS you have now found out. I am NOT in error. Doug

The reason I asked if you had the Fantastic instead of a Maxxair. Fantastic Fans use a metal pin switch on TOP only access by removing the Maxxair cover and opening the vent lid. You will see a short wire from the motor to that metal pin switch. That Pin switch supplies the GROUND to the fan Motor. Using a 7/16 wrench to tighten that pin switch about 3/4 turn and that will stop a loose intermittant ground that will cause your problem. The fuse holder WILL get hot and by pushing on the fuse holder you slightly flex the plastic vent housing causing that fan to run for a little while. Doug

Here is the photo of our rear fan. Says MaxxFan in upper left corner, fuse holder in in lower left corner.

I did not state the OP was in error. That is why I asked for confirmation. He checked and determined I was correct for his install. I went to Maxxair website and they showed NO such fuse as a part in the area the OP described. That is why I asked him to doublecheck. Also, is that from your 15 year old 2002? As I stated, they no longer offer those parts he needed IF he had a Maxxair. Doug
