measuring voltage when charging?

Is it best to measure voltage at the battery or at the converter / charger?

How big of a voltage difference can there be between locations before I should look at upgrading the wire size?

If you have a WFCO, change it out!
100 amp should have a boost button. Did the button not work?

He didn't say what the distance was....in my floorplan the converter is a good 25' from the batteries. It helped quite a bit when I added a #4 in parallel to the #6 on the (+) side. Frame ground is the (-) path.

Best to measure at battery but for the first test, Measure both, moving as quickly as possible,, that way you can tell if you need to upgrade your wire.

  • Save yourself the trouble and just replace the WFCO.
Otherwise for testing run your battery too low like 11.8 volts then have every possible 12v item running when you plug in. If voltage at the converter steadily rises above 14 volts you are doing better than most.

In addition to larger wire you may also need four or more batteries to get boost mode out of a 55a WFCO.

Technically you are looking for less than 13.2 volts at the converter during initial charging to trigger boost mode. Good luck.
  • From your next post (you're using a WFCO) I'd add make sure converter is going to 14.4 bulk mode, if not, no amount of wire is going to help.

  • You need to measure at the converter, and at the battery. When charging a depleated battery (converter putting out max) I think I'd upgrade if drop is over 0.2 V.

I moved converter to compartment next to the batteries and used battery cables from the local auto parts store.

I've read a lot about the WFCO not going into bulk charge mode and I'm wanting to monitor it's performance this weekend.
