My CD Radio has got gremlins

It's turning on by itself. Annoying, when in the night.

It tries to load CD - tray is empty - displays Empty Tray message - switches to radio mode. There are no clear loud stations in the area, just static noise and ugly orange backlight of display. (No, setting Volume to zero doesn't help, it starts from Medium every time).

The fuse is for entire kitchen, no separate fuse for radio. Disabling 12V to radio was impossible without taking it out of the upside-down hood holding it to the wall cabinet, so I took the hood off together with radio and disconnected the wires - photo below. All wires with connectors were tucked in the hood behind the radio - they probably thought it was German-made 1970 Grundig that needs no repairs within the owner's lifetime.

Model Jensen JCD 2010.

Attaching it again solely for esthetic purposes - 3 or 4 lbs weight, suspended from particle board on #8 screws - you gotta be kidding. Besides, the thing was junk anyway, poor reception and weird controls.

  • Check to see if the alarm is set, that will cause it to come on. Also see if there's a way to shut off the speakers.

Wouldn't the simple solution be to add a kill switch since you already have the radio out? I did, not because my stereo would randomly turn on but because I wanted to minimize draw on the battery those times we may camp without shore power. If the radio's performance bothers you just replace it with a similarly sized car stereo.
  • My 2004 Winnebago Class C had a Jensen radio in an outdoor panel. Late one night during a winter trip to Yosemite my DW said as we sat around the dinette "who's playing music at 11pm?" I opened the door and found no one camped anywhere near us. So I bundled up and went outside to find the radio blasting away. I opened the compartment and shut the radio off only to have it come back on a few minutes later. I turned the volume down to zero and shut it off. Next morning, I found it on and dug under the dinette to find the fuse and pull it. I called Jensen when I got home and they said that it happens sometimes from any kind of rogue radio waves. My solution was to find the power wire coming off the radio and put a rocker switch next to the radio.
Also, make sure the remote if stored somewhere doesn't have any buttons being pushed.
  • Deutschland Uber Alles

When the Krauts, put their mind to making an excellent product, they do not screw around. Grundig was such a product and the old Winco cast iron wind turbine generator was another which had German immigrant designers.

They worked. No excuses. No extended warranty. No 24 hour hot line. If you screwed up bub you found yourself out of business.

But I must confess the Germans have been blessed only once with a good line of batteries Sonnenschein. And when I lived a mile and a half in the sky I had to deal with German idiocy in automotive alternator and starter motor design. They had chronic severe SFLA when designing diesel engine electricals. Sudden Frontal Lobe Atrophy.

Not for vehicles, but there is a company here in the states that designs their own radio circuits then assembly takes place in Panda Land with strictly controlled component designating. C. Crane Co. Their stuff works exactly as described and stays working.
  • With polite gentleness, may I offer a suggestion?

    You erred...

"they probably thought it was German-made 1970 Grundig that needs no repairs within the owner's lifetime"

    Impossible

    You imply they thought

Thinking, is not on their program...
