Dangerous how? Heat? I lay it on the driveway, bricks on either side and a grill over, and stand by with extinguisher. I don't see how is that different from a stove burner. Or are you thinking now that it is shorter it will melt? O_o.
Also, your friend is wrong about storing AGM batteries. Top charging them is fine over long intervals of storage.
