Need a water softening device for small TT

I just got the bill for servicing my hot water heater, replacing the anode rod and cleaning out all of the calcium (or whatever) build-up in my cold water lines; $530! They also fixed my broken dead bolt, but that couldn't have been much, they didn't even need parts.

Although I've gone on several trips each year, I've only owned this brand-new TT since August of '12. The told me there was a huge amount of build-up in that hot water tank, and in the lines, too.

I have a filter, but I don't think it filters out calcium or other minerals from the water.

My question; will the standard water softener and freshener devices sold by Camping World help much? They are kind of pricy, and I want to make sure it's worth it.

I assume you have hard water at home? If so give your home filter company a call and ask them about a portable system you could use. Either that or consider filling your water tank from home.
Anode rod is a sacrificial part that should be replaced each year or so. Not sure how anyone can remove calcium deposits from water lines? I suspect you got $530 dollars for replacing the anode rod ( 10 dollar part, five minutes labor) and fixing the door lock. It is time you learn to do repairs yourself or your going to continue paying 100 dollars an hour labor for piddly little things.

I hear you. I never dreamed they were going to rape me so badly for such a seemingly simple job. They had always seemed fair in the past.

The problem was I keep my unit in a storage yard without water. I live in a condo with no way to leave my unit near my front door.

I can park it on the street and bum a neighbors faucet, and I would have done that to service the hot water tank myself, but I had no idea how to flush out the clogged-up water lines. The manual didn't really give a good schematic on how the thing is plumbed.

They told me they needed to remove the water lines to clean them out. I'm assuming this is what ran the bill up.
  • I have and use the Flow-Pur from Camping World (look on line for cheaper options) and it works very well. You will notice the difference immediately and the 10,000 grain unit means I only have to recharge it once a month or so (using fulltime). A somewhat small 8,000 grain unit might need recharging every 2-3 weeks so still not a big deal. The harder the water the more often it needs to be done. Mine came with test strips so you can "read" how well it's working and recharge as necessary.
  • I have an 'on the go" water softener, and I like it a lot. my set up is a whole house filter (got a Lowe's) then it goes into the softener and then the camper. shop around- I bought mine a few years ago, I shopped around and got a better price than from camping world. JMHO
