New A/C is here. Now, how to get it on the roof?

We did ours and there was a great amount of discussion etc. about how to put it on the roof.I asked an old rv tech. he looked at me and said."It only weighs 75 lbs"He strapped them on his back and took the up the ladder,swung it around onto his thick jacket,pulled it into place and went inside and finished.I hired 2 young fellows from the local lumber yard and that is how it went.I had the old one disconnected and out of the way.We were done and hooked up in under 1/2 hour.Threw the old one off the roof,onto the truck and done.I had quotations of $2200.00 for a crew of 2 to come 130 miles,$495.00 for a diagnostic call from a dealer 45 miles away,the $1100.00 for install.My wife paid me nothing for a total of 45 mins. and offered the guys each $50.00 for there time.They just laughed and took $20.00 for beer.You can do it yourself,not hard nor is the wiring.Oh and as a bit of information,the unit I bought is $495.00 delivered in the USA,$990.00 in Canada and you pick up.The USA dealers will not sell at the same price to Canadians even with the exchange nor ship over the border.Same old crap,Canadian suppliers and dealers screw us silly up here.

When I replaced ours out I just lowered it from the roof with w rope and just pulled it back up on the roof the same way. Used some towels on the edge of the 5vr just in case it rubbed.

I built a cradle with two pieces of plywood with 1x4 side braces.
Tied ropes to it and pulled it up the ladder with a guy pushing and guiding from below.
Leave it in the box and unpack it on the roof. It really wasn't very difficult.

I'm a very strong 6'3" guy and I wasn't able to pull the A/C unit up the ladder with a rope by myself. Had to get a buddy to help. He pushed and I pulled.

Definitely use plywood on the roof for protection.

A couple of old blankets will protect the roof well. I wonder if the plywood would damage the roof? A blanket under the plywood also works well.

With a pickup beside the RV, normally the bed is around 5' off the ground, so it is not to much higher to get to the RV roof, typically 11' off the ground? If you have a couple of 6' ladders, that will get you up to the roof, and I would suggest a pair of people on the truck/ladders, and someone already on the roof to steady it while the others can get up there to put it in place.

I think I would lay down either masonite or plywood sheets to rest it on.

My son-in-law and I used the ladder/rope/slide method to move a new A/C to the roof of my old Class C several years ago. It was not all that difficult with him pulling from the top and me guiding and pushing from the ladder. Just take your time and make sure the ladder is well anchored with the rails barely sticking up past the roof edge.

I just ordered our new roof unit last night. My plan is to make the swap at work. There is a scaffold I can use. The plan is 2 people can lift the unit onto the first level, climb on the first then lift to the second level then to the roof. Thats my plan, time will only tell how it works.

This gives me the willies.

We laid plywood atop the roof. But roof construction is probably different now.

Four people. Two on top, two on the bottom. Off came the shroud. Find tie points not to critical parts. Wrap unit in a packing quilt.

Grunt, sweat, swear.

But it was fun pushing the old one off the edge and watching it fall.
