You might have gotten away with it as there is rarely any staff out at the pumps but I can tell you with certainty that it's not legal to use milk jugs.
Reality is it's a safety concern. As someone gave an example of putting gas in a kerosene jug and then blew up the kerosene heater. Sure you have less risk putting diesel in a gas jug but once they establish approved colors, you don't give people lots of options because someone will mess up sooner or later in an unsafe manner.
