No shore power

Actually the generator was not running when shore power came back on. We had gone out for dinner and shut off the generator. When we got back to the oark we learned the power had come back on in the park, but we still had no power. Thats what made me believe there was a spike and it fried my transfer switch.

On Trnasfer switches.. What they do not tell you....

THey are not designed to transfer INDUCTIVE Loads such as air conditioners.. When you transfer an inductive load.. HOT, the instant voltage can easily spike to 1,000 volts or more.. This can cause Arc-over of the contacts on the Contactors and weld the relays in one or the other position.

So it was not likely the return of shore power. but the transfer from generator to shore that did it when you shut off the generator.

Suggestion is to always shut off power BEFORE transferring, either by turninf off the MAIN breaker in the RV (Works both ways) or by turning off the park breaker.. wait 3 minutes before restoring power.

Just to finish this thread, it turned out to be the transfer switch. When the electric came back on in the park it must have fried the shore side of the switch i could not get someone out quick enough to replace it, so i went out to camping world, bought the box and replaced it myself. Wasn't all that hard. Also got a plug in power monitor for the park pedestal. Don't want to go through this again All back to normal now. Thanks to all of you again

There should be two sets of terminals in the box. One side shore power and the other is power from the generator. If you are comfortable width dealing with electricity, and have a tester, you can check the outgoing lugs when plugged into shore power and when the generator is running. You will probably have current with the generator running and not when it's not running but plugged into shore power. If this is the case the XFR switch is bad.

I think you are right about needing to call an RV tech.

Well pretty sure i found it. Just cant tell if there is a problem or what to do about it. Will csll someone in to sort it out. Thanks to everyone for yoyr advice . Will burn through Propane for s couple more days

Didn't he find the box w/ the relay in it, or did I dream that.
So alls you have to do is remove the shore power cord wires from the relay, and connect them to the same terminals as the cord (wires) that go to the ac breaker panel. Note that your genset will no longer power your RV

I know where the power inlet is, and I know where the generator is, And I visualized where the two power lines would logically cross.

Well there was a cupboard there but the "Bottom shelf" was blocked off.. I removed the block off panel.. And SHOCK OF SHOCKS, there it was.

Suggest you do the same, Envision where the wires from Generator and Shore cord cross.. Who knows, might be there.

On the other hand in another RV it was in the back bedroom, a long way back from the genny..

OFTEN not far from the distribution panel. (Breaker panel).

Did you check for power at the incoming breaker or lugs ?
If there is none there and you have power at the power pedestal, then you must have a break some place in your power cord or plugs.

Also if your breaker at the power pedestal was tripped, before you can reset it, you have to switch it off.
