Onan 5.5 HGJAB Stalls

I'm in Mexico so this is just a long chance that someone has an idea that doesn't require parts. We'll be in Tucson in a week or so and can let a Tech look at it then. But, maybe one of you have seen this movie.

Onan 5.5 HGJAB purrs like a kitten for about 23 minutes under load and then stalls. It will start back up with very little coaxing...2 attempts. It throws a 3/36 code which doesn't tell me much. Oil is at proper level. It does it stationary or moving. Wires all look ok. Motorhome fuel tank full. It was on high altitude setting when we were in the mountains but I put it back to normal when we got to sea level.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Thanks! Yes gas. Does NAPA recognize it as an Onan part? Trying to figure out what to ask for. I think it is a fuel issue too...nothing else makes sense.

  • What type of fuel does the genset and MH use? Gasoline or diesel? I am assuming gasoline, but if it is a diesel, don't take any advice for a gasser.

The first thing that comes to mind... is the fuel tank near the quarter tank level? The port of the generator for fuel is a quarter tank, so if it gets lower than that, the engine will still run, but the genset would run dry.

If it were a gasoline generator and gas engine, I'd probably dump some Berryman's B-12 or another additive in the tank just to see about helping with varnish on the carb. If the rig sits around for a while and the generator is unused, I'd also consider tossing a fuel preservative in the tank on a fillup just to prevent varnish from happening.
