Onan emerald plus bge series

It's an easy question I hope. I let the generator run empty going down the road. Now it won't stay running. I'm sure I just have to prime the carb and I'm guessing I can jumper the fuel pump with a hot wire. Before doing this I would like to verify lol. I did take air filter off and it runs fine with little bit of starting fluid.
  • Stew,
You got me thinking about this again...

After a google search, I found a few who said they added a priming circuit, backfeeding with no issues. Looking at the service manual at the link above, it looks like it will only backfeed and energize the coil, would need someone smarter than me to confirm.

At the following link, here is a unique solution (wire diagram included), where they add the prime circuit inside at the remote panel. A simple solution, but not without risk, as the author states "don't press the prime button and start button at the same time..." :)

You may have found smokstak.com which is into all manner of engines.
  • Lol it's a red letter day I picked the right forum topic! Jim in my quick search about priming I ran across a thread where someone added a priming circuit with an aftermarket board. Looking back I'm guessing this is done to prevent back feeding. I think it was a diesel forum not sure which one though. I'm waiting for it to stop raining so I can go out and get this done.

    This may be...your service manual.

I must've been freaked out. You in fact DID put this in Tech Issues, right where it belongs. OOPS on Me.
  • I've got a BGE, and do what you are describing. The positive lead from the battery is just below the fuel pump. You can push aside the rubber boot covering the bolt on the positive lead. Then separate the flat spade connector on the fuel pump wire, then touch the fuel pump side of this wire to the positive lead from the battery.

The pump will start, let it run until the pump slows, this will let you know the carb bowl is full.

I've thought about wiring a primer circuit, by installing a momentary switch from the battery lead to the pump connector (fused), but was concerned backfeeding the fuel pump circuit would cause issues. If you try it, let me know if it works...

  • I run my dry each season - might take a couple of attempts when I start up in the spring but I don't' have to jump anything or do anything special.
  • Stop button doesn't seem to prime. Ahhh didn't think of back feeding thanks!! I'll add numbers shortly thank you!

Our ONAN 4KY runs the fuel pump to prime the carb when it's not running and I hold the Start-Run-Stop switch in Stop. I don't think yours does that but I don't excel at reading schematics. The narrative didn't indicate it did.

What you want to do should work. I'd suggest though, that you disconnect the fuel pump wire from the harness then apply the 12VDC to just the pump. Then you know you aren't backfeeding something you shouldn't. A jumper lead protected with a fuse or breaker is a good idea. I use one with a 10A auto-reset breaker.

You can get a more definitive answer by asking Moderator to move it to Tech Issues, then update with the full Model/Spec number. Last character of Model is Spec.
