Onan HGJAB 7KW - Remote switch issue

I am having a strange issue with the remote start switch on our Onan HGJAB 7KW. The switch functions just fine, I can prime and start / stop no issues. The issue is that the run light never comes on and I recently noticed the hour meter is not working. The hour meter is clicking like it is getting power and attempting to tick off the time but the meter is not moving. I'm thinking the hour meter issue is unrelated and simply broken. Any thoughts on the light not working on the remote switch?

Thanks!
  • If you have 12 volts on each leg of the bulb you have a bad ground, If you have 12 volts on one leg and 0 on the other the bulb is bad.
  • I confirmed that I have 12v at the remote switch (blue wire) when the gen is running. I am convinced it's the bulb. Have a trip planned so will replace either the bulb or the switch when I return. Thanks everyone for the info.
  • The same B+ lead (12 volts) feeds the lamp and hour meter- have you actually tested the lead for power (and ground) while genset is running?
  • MEX - Starting the gen from the switch on the gen does not light the run light on the remote switch and the hour meter clicks but does not register time. The run light is functioning on the gen switch outside though.

YC 1 - Thanks for the link. I will investigate the bulb and connections. I did already re-seat the remote harness at the gen with no success.
  • Ok, I found a schematic and here is what might associate the two issues. If one of the mating plugs is not working both the light and the meter may indeed not run. You can use the diagram I provided and see if there is voltage on the pins the bulb is associated with. IF you see voltage on both sides of the bulb then the ground is not working. Go to the plugs that lie along the side of the generator and exercise them by finding the little lock and disconnect and reconnect them.
  • Bulb replacement

Thanks to another member I have save this information and used it three times this week alone. The bulbs can be replaced but I would use an led any day of the week.

As for the hobbs meter running I doubt the switch has anyting to do with it but I will see if any of my schematics show it. It may even be run by an oil pressure sensor.
