Onan microlite 2500 lp only runs for a second

My Onan microlite 2500 lp propane genny only runs for a second.

It has 123 volts at the plug and I disabled the oil pressure switch with no change.

It's 28 degrees Outside and my genny starts, then stops as soon as I let off the start button.

If I give it a little propane by opening the throttle with my finger it will keep running, then continue to run on its own.

If I shut it off I need to go through the same procedure to start it.

Thanks!

  • Ok, I think I fixed it.

I put a heater in the propane compartment and warmed up the 2 way tank switch and regulator. Genny ran rough at first, then smoothed out.

I may just replace the reg and switch because it always smells like propane in the compartment.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

  • I read a bunch about the oil sensor, and disabled it, and I continued to see the same problem. I changed the oil this summer and put several hours of genny use in after the change. I checked the oil level and its topped off.
  • change the oil. I bought a used trailer and had the same problem. Those gens have a low oil shutoff. Old diluted oil or too light of wgt will not work that sensor. I changed the oil to correct wgt and all was good for 3 yrs till I sold it. When I drained the oil it was thin as water. Give it a try or the sensor may be defective. Good luck.
  • I believe altitude adjustments are only for gas models, not propane like mine.

It seems like the device that operates the throttle is not opening it up reliably.

It will also drop to a slow sputtery idle while running sometimes but if I open the throttle by hand it will kick back up and the throttle will stay opened up.
  • Doesn't the propane aperture need to be adjusted to a larger opening when in high altitude or frigid locations?
  • Check the wire wound resister in the start circuit. On startup it bypasses the resister so it has a higher start voltage. If the resister goes bad the circuit goes open when you release the start button. You can check it for continuity with a vom.

Forget tha above. I finished reading your post and that cant be your problem but i thought i would leave the info in case someone searches and has the problem where it only runs while holding in the start button.
