PD4645 ugrade, from 25 amp Magnatec?

Similar noise has been reported before. IIRC some have received a warranty replacement.

I put in the 4645 into the camper to replace the old 25 amp Magnatek. It did have 8 gauge wire for pos and neg from the charger to the battery, so I left that in place. Thanks all for the info.


Now is it normal for the converter to have a higher pitch buzzing when hooked to shore power? It goes away when I turn on 5 or more LED bulbs. Changes the buzzing frequency each bulb I turn on.

I did have this converter in my old camper, and do remember some noise, but only use shore power at home to keep charged and cool down the fridge. Thanks!

8 gauge is fused at 40 amps, 10 gauge max fuse size should be 30 amps.

That said, a #12 wire used in a oven can carry 30 amps with the proper insulation so that the wire heating to 200F will not be damaged. But normally #12 wire is good for 20 amps in a home and will last with average wire insulation 50+ years of the home.

I would not think that your camper came with a 25 amp cheap charger and upgraded wiring. So it might have 12 or 10 gauge wire. 10 gauge will work with your 45 amp converter because most of the time 30 amps will not be going into the battery. Chances are when you start your generator, it might put 30 amps into the battery until the voltage goes over 13.4 volts, then charge rate slows. Even my 70 amp charger with 4,000 watt generator and 4 golf cart batteries will not put out more than 45 amps for more than a few minutes. Once the battery reaches 13.2 volts, charge rate slows.

The 25 amp converter might have used about 2.5-3 amps at 120 volts, and run fine on a small generator. The 45 amp can use 5 amps 120 VAC, or about 600 watts. If the generator is not up to the task, you will have a problem.

A $229 solar panel can solve all of these problems.

SunElec.com sells a 140 watt solar panel with a aluminum frame, and about $229 a few weeks ago. You want to look for a 12 volt nominal panel, PWM controller, and aluminum frame around the panel to bolt to the mounts, and to the roof.

2" angle aluminum 6" long will mount them to the roof. 3- 3/16: holes for #10 screws into the roof, and 5/16" hole for a 1/4" bolt into the panel frame.

Make no difference, but it sounds like you maybe think you are up grading from 25 amps battery charging, when in reality you will be up grading nearly the whole 45 amps. That 6300 Mag never did charge at more than 3 amps (could have been optinal 12a but not likely) so you should see near a 100% improvement in battery charging.
On another note, is that 4645 a wizad 3 stage ? Seems like the old ones weren't.

35 amp is fine with a single battery or even two. Will match well with Honda 1000.
#8 wire is fine with 45 amps or less.
Yes bigger wire will have a measured improvement. If pulling wire go #4.

If you upgrade or add a wire, go with at least a set of #6 or even #4.
Do not add smaller wire as they are not protected properly.

I doubt you would ever pull the 45 amps, but the circuit should be protected to it's rating by a fuse or auto resetting breaker.

I have a 45 amp PD converter. The wire from the battery to the converter is #6 AWG. It is protected by a 40 amp ckt. breaker.

Like enblethen said, 2 easy choices. Leave the circuit protected at 25 or 30 amps or add a parallel run of wire between the converter and battery. Either would be a safe bet.

I would probably add a second run of probably 12 AWG wire and up the circuit breaker to to 40 amps. It wouldn't cost much and would give you extra capacity. If you want to over do it, go with 10 AWG.

Number 8 wire should be good for 40 amps.
Double check the wire. Make sure both the positive and negative is number 8.

Thanks. So you think the wiring in the camper would be good to 40 amps? A 40 amp fuse would be a good test for this.

The only 12v item that puts a lot of demand is the furnace. And I'm installing a Wav3 heater to supplement when it's real cold, so that won't be a huge item any longer.
