Portable Solar Solution?

We have a 20' TT with 2 12V batteries. We don't have a television so the electricity is mostly for lights, water pump and the heater fan. We can go 2 days before the power runs way low. If we drive a ways every 2 days we're okay. I'd rather not get a generator. I have read all kinds of posts about solar panels to charge up the batteries but I haven't seen a post recomending a portable system. (It's probably there, somewhere). With a portable system, I won't have to pierce the roof and I can orient the panels to morning or afternoon sun. What have you found that works?
  • If possible, I'd recommend both... a few rooftop panels to give you 100-200 watts, as well as a portable system, and have both on separate charge controllers.

That way, you don't have to pull your portable system out at a campsite in order to get power.

Depending on the roof, there are solar mountings which use high-strength adhesive to attach, which is an alternative to punching holes through.

We had purchased the Renogy Portable Suitcase and since we went solar we have used our portable generator only one time when we were camping in an area that had only liquid sunshine for two days. The longest we have gone with only Solar If I recall correctly was for 11 days and could have went longer but all good things (Camping & relaxing) had to come to an end.
When we were shopping we checked out GoPower, Renogy and Zamp and after much research we went with the Renogy.

I'd be interested in hearing more. How long have you had it? How has it held up? What size/configuration batteries do you have?

Renogy seems to be quite a bit less expensive than other makes (Zamp, etc) so that makes it attractive, but there are some less than kind reviews on the Renogy about quality, durability, and energy generation out there. Not sure what to believe about Amazon-type reviews, but I'd like your thoughts on your system. Thanks.
  • The most interesting system I've seen (online) is the Kickass system.
They use 3 folding panels and have a variety of wattage configurations.
It looks like a really solid system, and up to 300 Watts portable, but apparently they are only available in Oz? Anyone have experience with them?

  • Thanks. Okay, I see the GoPower and the Renogy suitcase. They both look like just what we need. Probably the 120 or 150 watt models.
  • GoPower has a setup that you might like
