Power Awning?

We just lost our stowed awning in a violent thunderstorm yesterday and are considering replacing it with a power awning. Thought being that we'll use it more if it can be deployed with the press of a button.

Any advice as to brand or features? Is the wind sensor worth it? We've heard
conflicting opinions. We weren't particularly satisfied with the Carefree awning
that came with the rig. The fabric faded badly and the hardware wore somewhat.
Is Dometic any better?

Any and all comments appreciated.
  • We had the Carefree manual on our Cameo and we did not use it a lot now we have the A&E Weatherpro with alumashield on the Mobile Suites and so far we like it, they can be put out in different lengths of deployment which is great if you only want to shade the windows or there is obstacles in the way of full deployment plus they have remote controls. I would suggest that you go onto the websites of the different awnings and read the owners manuals for full benefits and features of each.
  • I greatly prefer the Carefree Eclipse for power models simply because you can easily adjust the pitch. Carefree fabric is actually heavier than Dometic (though I like the Dometic manual hardware better).
  • The two things I really like about a power awning is if a storm pops up in the middle of the night I can retract it without going outside and also that it can auto dump any water that builds up on it.
  • Our latest camper has our first power awning and I love it. I use it differently since it is so easy to deploy and retract. I put it out when I need it and pull it in at all other times such as when sleeping or away from the RV.

Very handy but you learn new habits to take advantage of its capabilities. I am all for anything that makes set up and tear down faster.

  • I had a power awning on the HTT I just sold. The new Puma comes with a manual awning. Thought I was going to miss that easy press of a switch. Well, I don't miss the power awning at all. I can set the manual up in about 2 minute and I can stake it down if need be. I have a Dometic and like it so far, but it's only a few months old.
  • The old HTT had a manual awning, the new TT has a power one.
Given a choice I'd have gone with the manual awning, as Wis says they can be tied down.
  • FWIW we've had a power awning as standard equipment on our last 2 campers. I'd go make to a manual in a heartbeat. Sure the convenience of just pushing a switch is great but IMHO the manual awnings are alot more stable in the wind and can be tied down. You'll hear conflicting reports about being able to tie down a power awning.
