Propane smell

The propane doesn't work on our 2012 Cougar 5th wheel anymore. One tank felt full and the other felt about half full. The tanks are on opposite sides of the camper. One side has a regulator with an automatic switchover. The other side has a small regulator on it and this side has a gas smell and some air escaping the regulator. Even when I shut this tank valve off and removed the tank I couldn't get any use out of the other tank. Moving the lever that switches the tanks didn't help. I didn't notice anything wrong when I shut the valves when we left the last campground.

No. The red one is probably 20 to 30 psi outlet pressure.

  • The opposite side (roadside) has a 30# RED single stage regulator so lower pressure propane goes across to other side where the MAIN 2 stage regulator is.

The RED regulator is faulty.....it is leaking propane not air. REPLACE IT!

The other cylinder where Main Regulator is (curbside).
Valve it out. Swap indicator lever to it. Then SLOWLY open the service valve.
  • It sounds like your main regulator has malfunctioned. Had the same thing happen in my Cougar a few years ago. I had to replace both regulators and it worked perfectly after that. Another common failure mode on those rigs is that the pigtail gets plugged up and won't let gas flow.
