Pulled out screws

The awning on my truck camper pulled loose where the foot bracket screws to the body. The wood is not rotten I hung the awning on the lifting jack, and pulled it out. Now how do I repair the holes so the screws will stay in. I know I will have to seal around it with dicore but screws won't tighten up now.

  • Hi,

Better to cut some plugs to get the grain orientation correct than to use doweling.

Hello gbsb. The best thing to plug stripped screw holes are golf tee's (much better than wood dowels). They are made from hard wood and very strong. Just remove the screws and coat the golf tee with good water proof glue and hammer them into the hole. Once the glue is dry cut the tee's flush, drill pilot hole and reinstall bracket using caulk.

Works great. Have repaired door hinge screw holes with this method many times.
  • I would drill them out and glue in hardwood dowel rods. Pre-drill before reattaching.
  • I'm not and RVer, but I've repaired many an enlarged screw hole with wire mesh inserts.

  • Hi,

Start by squirting wood restorer into each screw hole. Get as much in as you can.

After it has cured fill each of the holes with leather (cut in a triangular shape) after squirting the hole with some slow cure CA glue for wood. Wait until the glue cures then use an exacto knife to cut any protruding leather off flush to the surface. Insert the screws flush to the surface and let them stay overnight. Now remove each screw and as you do so give the hole a squirt of water thin CA glue. This will preserve the "threads" the screws have cut into the leather.

The above is how hardwood "rails" on Steinway grand pianos are renewed if an over enthusiastic technician strips a hole.

Reinstall the awning. When putting in the screws, turn them backwards first until you feel them go "click" into the threads you have cut. When the screws are one turn from fully tightened put a dab of dicor at the top. Finish tightening and wipe away the excess dicor.
  • Will a flat head stainless steel screw and nut work ? Would have to drill thru to inside of camper. Always use some type of quality sealant. Repair will last forever.

This was mentioned back a few posts. Use wood glue in the hole first and then fill in the hole wood slivers or toothpicks etc to fill the hole back up. Then you can re-use it again when it dries. There was a squirt-in product mentioned as well but I don't remember the brand name.

I have done this before myself with wood slivers but not with something as heavy as the awning mounting... Hope that works as easy..

Others said he used JB WELD to fill the hole first???

Maybe you can move an inch down on the mounting section and set a new hole???

Just a couple of my thoughts
