Pump Flojet Quad 4406?

Thinking to get this 4-chamber pump: http://www.depcopump.com/datasheets/flojet/4406-Series_IOM_Manual.pdf.

The word is, is it quiet because has 4 chambers. My current 3-chambers Shurflo is louder than a farm tractor.

The Quad manual says:
"The built-in bypass valve eliminates the need for an accumulator tank. Do not install in a system with an accumulator tank. The tank will interfere with the internal bypass valve".

When I open the faucet to mere trickle, my current Shurflo is all shaking and cycling on-off every few seconds. Was about to get an accumulator, but this Quad Flowjet - looks like - eliminates the need? Does this really work, smooth flow for a minute or two without cycling?

SYes, PEX pipes transfer the vibration. But the sound of the actual pump doesn't disappear with soft piping or sandwiching the foam under the pump. Like I said, it was pretty loud when I was holding it in my hands, disconnected from trailer floor. Don't remember the exact name now, but it is not Shurflo Revolution - some earlier 3 chamber Shurflo.

Back to the Flowjet with by-pass. The consensus seems to be that it doesn't need expansion tank to smooth the flow, but the by-pass is a no substitute for expansion tank either. You open the faucet a trickle, or flush the toilet - and the pump with by-pass (and without exp. tank) will go online immediately. I hope I got it right.

SoundGuy, you are right. The pump is mounted on the sound board - particle board "box" over the wheel well. But... I played with it in different ways, and the sound wasn't much quieter even when I held it in my hands, with no sound boards attached. I think I'll just evict it into some outside box, my stay is measured in weeks and months at a time. When I'm standing in the shower, feeling that horrible vibration with bare feet - this is not my idea of relaxing.

You'd know better than I since it's your pump but if you take a look at my pics you'll see how I mounted my own Shurflo Revolution to a piece of 3/4" plywood which in turn sits atop a thick piece of foam. Next I discovered that adding more soft water hose to the input side of the pump made little difference but adding a loop of it to the output side made a HUGE difference. I've got 25' in there as I used a 25' length of potable water hose for the purpose but I'm pretty sure that 15' would be sufficient. It does however have to be at least that long in order to dampen pump vibration and prevent it from radiating out to the hard wall PEX to which it eventually connects. This technique does work, so much so that I had to add a light to my pump circuit so I'd know when the pump was running. In the still of the night I can hear when the pump is running it but there's anything else such as a fan running in the camper I can't hear it at all. All the other methods of quieting a water pump in any of the trailers we've owned over the years haven't been anywhere near as effective as this method just described ... it really does work. :B

No it's not ;) ... put it on your workbench and you'll be amazed at how quiet any of these potable water pumps are. :B It's the installation that's noisy and until you fix that no pump is going to be as quiet as it truly can be. Isolate the pump properly and you'll hardly be able to hear it run, just as I've been able to achieve. Proof of the pudding are pics and video in my gallery. :)
  • Not to smooth the water flow so much but to reduce a spike in pressure when the water heater goes from cold to hot with no water flow.

This issue has caused pipe leaks in an apartment building, two homes and my RV to the tune of $20,000.
All fixed eventually and since prevented with an expansion tank.
    Maybe I am a bit biased ;)

No idea why that (or any) pump would not work with an expansion tank.

I understand what your saying but there's nothing to smooth out so the tank doesn't help. Bypass pumps supply water just as smooth as the tap in your house (or they're supposed to when working right).
An expansion tank would interfere with with the flow of these kinds of pumps.
The same was true of my Sensor 5.7. It varies speed to supply a perfect flow. I already had an accumulator tank so I ran it with it. All it did was make the pump run longer than needed and then flow would surge when pressure dropped and the pump was called for. There was no benefit at all so I removed it and it works perfect without it.

I do have a good use for an expansion tank though. I had a 1 gallon Exp. tank and would charge it up with water pressure before going to bed. That way I could shut the pump off (which was under our bed) and the water in the pressurized tank would quietly supply water for family members flushing the toilet during the night. It was enough for 15 to 17 flushes!

Thanks Roy. Pieces of foam, carpet, pipes tied to one another or to something else - I've been through all of this. It is quiet-er now, not quiet enough for me. Sometimes it's resonating in odd places like plastic bathroom sink 10 ft away starts rumbling. Quality of these carton boxes on wheels doesn't seize to amaze me.

Short On-Off intermittent bursts when you open the faucet just a little, are the worst. Very crude pressure sensing in Shurflo.

Have been eyeing this Shower Booster - it "sounds" like a quiet but the cost is prohibitive. I understand this is an on-demand pump, 2A current, they don't tell PSI. Ignore the AC power supply, the pump itself is 12V.

I really helped out in the noise area on my water pump by making sure none of the lines were up against anything and also placed a piece of carpet under the pump... Helped out big time for me...

I was going to buy one of those in-line one quart tanks for it but never did after I got it quietened down... Both listed on the same page on AMAZON...
