Be careful Ken, an infrared thermometer does not use the laser dot to measure temperature! It uses a cone of measurement that expands based on your thermometers distance to spot ratio! Everything inside the circle of measurement is averaged into the temp displayed...
For example, if you have a 1:1 ratio IR thermometer and you are 5 inches away from your target, you will have roughly a 5" diameter circle of measurement! So even though your laser pointer is on the AVR your actually measuring the average of that 5" circle (which may be the shroud in this case which would greatly drop the temperature reading.
Treat the laser as a targeting aid which shows you the center of the measurement circle!
