I camp in the high mountains of Arizona and am looking for a generator that will run well at upwards of 9400 feet in elevation. I am looking into the Honda EB3000. I want a generator that will compensate for the altitude. One that will not need its jets exchanged for when I am in the valley of the sun or high in the pines. Any thoughts on the Honda or another perhaps cheaper solution?
I just returned a Kipor because it would need its jets changed out to work properly.
I doubt you will find anything that will compensate for altitude (automatically lean the mixture). You might find something that has adjustable mixture.
Also, any IC engine will lose power as you go up in altitude. I forget the exact formula, but at 9400 feet I would guestimate that you will only get about 65% of the sea-level power. If you figure you need a full 3000w at 9400 feet, you might have to buy a 4500w generator to get it.
These generators are among the last gasoline engines to use a carburetor. It is only a matter of time before fuel injection becomes standard equipment. The result will be better fuel economy and superior performance at any altitude, as fuel injection automatically compensates for altitude variation. Prices will increase somewhat.
