- gboppExplorerI've never paid to have a tank re-certified. They just did a visual check. One time I was told to paint the tank before I brought it back, it had a little surface rust on the bottom
- CJW8ExplorerI've had several done. Have to go to a bulk propane supplier, not a gas station outlet. They do a visual inspection looking for rust mostly. Sometimes they spray soap on the valve and look for bubbles. Then they re-stamp it. Some suppliers do it for free, some charge a minimal amount.
- Old-BiscuitExplorer IIIPropane tanks don't need re-certification as they are ASME jurisdiction/standards!!
Propane cylinders under DOT have to be re-certification done 12 yrs after mfg. date stamped on collar and then every 5, 7 or 12 yrs depending on type of re-certification (External Visual, Proof-Pressure or Volumetric Expansion)
Propane BULK dealers can do re-certifications----certified by DOT for as a 'requalifier'
Some propane fill stations can do it IF they have been certified by DOT as a 'Visual' inspector
Propane Cylinder Requalification Guide - KountryguyExplorerThanks for all the replies. I will have to try to find a place to get it done.
- Dutch_12078Explorer IIIA local refiller near our Adirondack cottage charges $5 for a visual recertification, free for his regular LP customers.
- korbeExplorerAll my tanks, I mean cylinders, have been been re-certified. Cost has been between 5 and 10 bucks. The process has been a bit odd, including how the tank, I mean cylinder, is stamped, but next time I fill the tanks, I mean cylinders, I will see how that goes. I was told that the tank, I mean cylinder, is to be empty for the process to go forward.
- mobeewanExplorerFind a full service propane dealer in your area. One that makes home deliveries & installs the outdoor tanks at homes & businesses.
I used one in a neighboring county that also sells gasoline & diesel. Got 2 - 20lb & 1 - 6lb for $5 each. They did a visual inspection & etched the collar. Good for 5 more years. If inspected & pressure tested it will cost more & is good for 7 more years. - brireneExplorerI once had a uhaul refuse to fill mine because it was ONE DAY over 12 years. Ended up having to exchange it. Next time I had one filled at my usual propane dealer, he told me they would have certified it, basically just a visual inspection, as idaho stated. No charge.
- mboppExplorerI get mine done at Suburban Propane here. Visual check and stamp a new expiration date on it. Can't remember what it cost.
- idaho556ExplorerI've have done many time here in Idaho , I go to valley coop store and they recertify for free. All they do is Visual check .
