Refrigerator Freezing Food

Headed out for the 1st trip of the season and discovered that most of our food had frozen solid in the refrigerator. The coldness level 1 - 5 was set at 3. Anyone had similar problems or know why it's doing that?

Without your saying what kind of fridge, most newer ones have a thermistor mounted on the cooling fins in the fridge compartment. It leads to terminals on the control board. If it is disconnected, removed from the fins, wires broken or terminals corroded, the control board will interpret that as needing to keep the cooling unit running.

I had the same problem, and the above was the cause.

In mine, there was a big white plastic clip, (about 4" tall and 1" folded over each side of one of the cooling fins) that is supposed to hold the temp sensor against the aluminium fins in the back top portion of the fridge. The clip was still there, but upon closer inspection, the temp sensor and wire had fallen out from behind the clip, leaving the temp sensor hanging from that single white wire.

Reattached the sensor by removing the clip, slipping it inside the clip again, and placing the clip back on the fin.

If you look closely, you can see the white wire leading up to the clip under the red circle in this picture.

From time to time that happens to me.. Depending on the outside temps.

I just turn it down a notch and all is good.

You need to monitor the temps in the fridge, if they get too high, turn it up a notch, too low, down a notch.. Alas, regulation is not all that great on these units.

Website BryantRV has Service Manuals. Find your make/model and the manual should tell you how to test it. If testing shows thermistor bad, gOOgle "Snip the Tip" for an easy-to-install replacement.
  • My fridge will freeze food solid. Then, if too jot outside, it has a hard time keeping things cool. These don't seem to do as good a job as residential refrigerators. What I have done is put a remote thermometer transmitter in the fridge. This way I can adjust the temp without opening the door.
