Removal of Ford E350 dash

I'm going to be removing my existing Jensen double-din radio and installing a new Pioneer 4200NEX that provides Android Auto capability.

It sounds like the Pioneer can't use the existing in-dash mounting kit that the Jensen uses. According to Crutchfield their mounting kit requires removal of the dash. It can't be done through the radio opening.

Anyone have experience removing the E350 dash? I'm just wondering what I'm getting into. I know Crutchfield does a good job with their proprietary instruction sheets that are vehicle-specific but you don't get to see those until you buy the unit.

  • Lots of youtube videos of that dash removal. I had my 2004 dash off just the other day. It's not very hard. Remove the two screws in the top that point up just in front of the speedometer. Pull your radio knobs off and as the dash comes away, unplug the cigarette lighter plug. Also the radio removal tools can easily be mad by cutting up a good wire coat hanger. Searching out a video is time well spent.
  • The existing Jensen definitely has the radio removal holes on the side of it as you mention. I have the removal tool and I actually took the radio out today from the front, just to see what was behind it and what I might be getting into. Getting the existing Jensen radio out from the front is not a problem. The problem, at least according to Crutchfield, is that the Pioneer 4200NEX has no way to be mounted from the front into the same kit that the Jensen mounts into. They claim that a different mounting kit has to be installed and the only way this kit can be installed is with the dash off.

It's hard to type when I'm consumed with jealousy and green with envy! You have that gorgeous late model cockpit. I pulled the "Instrument Panel Bezel" out of our 2002 E450 and can offer the following:

    1. Probably the same concept as our older panel

    2. There'll be a few "hidden" screws. Look for some going up into the bottom of the dash pad, above the tach/speedometer

    3. It'll be held by Very Very Robust spring clips

    4. I suspect that you'll pull everything black/dark gray from just left of the instrument cluster, all the way to the right of the doghouse

    5. 4. will include the burl trim around the radio area and A/C vents

    6. Radio, A/C controls will be left behind

    7. You may have to unplug a couple items, maybe a power outlet, if they cling to the Bezel

    8. Again, those clips are bad-to-the-bone! It took way more pull for me to get it out than I ever would have thought. And, going back together, I got a finger caught behind it, couldn't reach for my pry tool, and had an awful time getting loose. But I still have 10 fingers, 10 toes, and no extra holes after the project.

Here's a pic of what the dash looked like with the bezel off. Notice A/C is ducting only since vent diffusers came off with bezel. Also, a prev owner installed an aftermarket radio, and the "Can" that mounts to the vehicle, got mounted only to the Bezel, not the dash structure itself. I suspect your radio is mounted to that structure, and you might need Radio Release Tool to get it loose.

You might not need to remove the entire dash.

I see 4 holes in the radio face.. Those holes are for a radio REMOVAL TOOL which looks like a big "U"..

You can fashion a tool from a coat hanger, make a U big enough to go from the top and bottom holes on left and right sides.

Once inserted you should be able to put some pressure from the inside towards the outside of the radio on your make shift tools then try pulling out.

You can also buy the tools which have a small notch on the ends to help with the removal.

If that fails then the dark grey surround which goes all the way over to the drivers side can be removed. It is held in by a bunch of snap in retainers.

You will have to carefully start on one end with your finger nails or a screw driver (screw driver method CAN "screw" up things so to speak if you are not careful) and then pull away from the dash..

They may even make a specific dash removal tool, but I have been lucky to be able to get mine with my finger nails for '03, '06 and 2013 F250s.

Not familiar with that exact dash but some have a hidden set of screws on the lower part of the dash (my 2013 F250 is like this but the '03 and '06 does not have these screws).. The two separate pieces to the left and right beside the heat/AC controls may need to be removed to get to those screws.. I suspect you have before 2011 so there might not be hidden screws..

    On edit..

Adding pix for the removal tools..

I can't say definitively on your unit but all of my Fords, both F and E series, there is a little trim piece, a ring sort of, that goes all the way around the instrument cluster and control panel where they meet the dash.

It just pops off if you get you nails behind it and give a gentle tug. It conceals the screws that hold the instrument cluster and control pod in place.
