Replace Refrigerator..Or Cooling unit

I have an older model Norcold, 874 EG3 that decided to go belly up. The pipe in back gets hot but doesn't cool at all. I took it to a certified Norcold repairman and he said it wasn't an ammonia leak, just old and worn out.

I found a place online that refurbishes the cooling unit for $425.00 exchange. A new replacement model, a 410, costs 760 plus shipping for a two way, three way is $999.00

My question(s) are; replace the cooling unit and still have the older panels and such or bite the bullet and go new.

Second question. I have a 3 way in there now, is it worth the extra cash to go from 2 way to three way? I understand it is ultimately my choice, but would like the opinions of you more experienced folks.

Thanks.. Bob J.

On the 2/3 way question: I agree, the DC option is not that great draws way too much power and may not work all that well.

I'm not sure if I'd replace the entire thing or just the cooling unit but.. If your reaons for wanting 3-way is you do not like using propane.... Consider this.

Both Norcold and Dometic make compressor driven high effiency units, these draw so much power that when you open the door and the light comes on consumption goes up 50%, (That is to say they draw less than 50 watts). 120/12 volt only. I have a freezer using the same technology beside me as I type, I do not even bother with the 120 volt option less the 12 volt fails (Which it has due to a bad wire or connection in the feed line for the socket it is plugged into).
  • The repairman I have used (and trust) tried to beat the price of the same unit online. Even with shipping, and not paying any tax, I am coming out a couple of hundred to the good. Or so it seems. I have not placed the order yet, paralysis by analysis.

I have made a couple of hurried mistakes on this Class B and I really can't afford many more.. Thanks for all the information and advice.

I wish I was knowledgeable enough to offer advice on here, but I'm not. Believe me, I check every site and thread recommended try and sort things out.

  • When we replaced ours, our Rv dealer was also a dealer for Norcold. As units were shipped to him on consignment, he did not pay shipping. The final cost was much less than a replacement cooling unit, on which we would have to pay shipping, plus the labor to install it.
  • Thanks to all who answered. I think new is the choice. A two way.

  • Kinda depends on how you use your trailer. I would replace it with a residential fridge in a heartbeat if you don't boon dock.

If the fridge did not leak then there is a strong possibility a piece of crud is blocking the ammonia tubing orifice. That is where the standing the fridge inverted for a day came from. Even if you get it free, it will probably happen again in the not too distant future.
  • How often do you use the DC Heating mode?

That mode is really only good while in transit due to high amp draw on battery and low wattage heater element........not much good for anything else.
    So why have it??

New fridge..new current controls....no brainer unless you want to go compressor unit
  • 1. They do NOT wear out. There are no moving parts to wear out. What you have is a partially (or fully ) blocked cooling unit. This is from years of those times you parked unlevel. It accumilates
    2. If you have the EG2/3 series that puts the refer over 25 years old. Have you had the recall from 20 years ago done? Regardless, on a refer more than 25 years old, it is better to replace it, not repair it.
    3. Go 2 way. The 3rd way is a 12 volt heating element and it is ONLY for keeping the existing cold when in transit. You never use the 12 volt when camping. 12 volt will not cool down the refer. Doug
  • If you refer is more then 10 years old, replace the entire unit. newer ones are more efficient.
I would just get a two way.
