Replacing Dometic fridge with Norcold ???

I just ordered a new Norcold N841 to replace my Dometic RM2852. Has anyone done this swap? Tools and mechanical skills won't be the issue. I'm just curious if there are any "surprises" I should be concerned with. The dimensions of the two are the same. I'm hoping to be prepared before the new unit arrives in case I need to modify LP plumbing or electrical connections. Thanks much in advance for any help.

  • The LP and 12 volt connections are in different places- the LP connection is in to the left side of the refrigerator, Dometic middle-right. They are both 3/8" male flare. Norcold 12 volt connections are higher up quick connects, the Dometic bottom middle-left euro style terminal.
  • If and when my absorption fridge fails, I'll replace it with one of the Danfoss compressor models. I don't boondocks, so I don't have to run on propane, and my truck alternator puts out more than enough to keep it running on travel days until we get to our destination.
  • Thanks for the input. I'm just hoping to find that the install/connection is about the same between the two models. Funny story though. I had an Atwood many years ago. We arrived at our camping destination to find the fridge door and all of our groceries on the floor. I guess it goes to show that you never know what you're going to get.:)
  • They are very similar in reliability but the high occurrence of broken hinges would keep me away from the Norcold.
I'm pretty much fed up with the lousy quality of both and would probably give the Helium fridge by Atwood a try if (when) mine fails.
  • For much less than half of the price, a household would insure COLD temps.

  • If the dimensions are the same, no problem. The only small problem may be hooking up the LP line. You may have to extend it to fit if they did not leave extra copper behind the refer.
    NORCOLD or DOMETIC?
People that have had a bad experience with Dometic will blame Dometic and swear by Norcold. People that have had a bad experience with Norcold will swear that Dometic is better. This is the SAME reasoning as Chevy or Ford. They are both equal. BUT, I would opt for a Norcold only because I believe Norcolds Box insulation is a little better than Dometic's. The performance is almost identical. Of course I am NOT a RV'er, I just have been in the RV service business as a Tech for 34 years. Doug
  • After much research They look to be about the same for recall and reliablity issues. My Dometic is dead and they are not covering it under the recall. Parts to repair were nearly as much as a new fridge. Buying the new fridge provides me with a longer warranty period than the parts would. After talking with a few techs in the area and online they prefered the Norcold. It sounds like six of one half dozen of the other. I guess we'll see.
  • well the only differance is the name there both absorbetion systems do to fail in high heat.
  • Why would you do that? Nor cold has had a terrible reputation lately. Just do a web search on Nor cold fires.
