The picture above was in the construction stages. A metal rod extends through the fold in the flapper, a spring attached to the lower corner of the flapper keeps it closed. I even had a cable attachment ready to use but discarded the idea since it was complicated and unnecessary. IIRC, the flapper seals against weatherstripping, also.
I was a nut about sealing anything attached to the outside skin. I've seen what a leaking marker light or poor window seal will do to a trailer.
