Replacing the Towing Mirrors?

We picked up a 2007 Class C Chevy based motorhome. There are two minor problems with the towing mirrors (driver and passenger door mounted).

The first is that the silver backing has degraded. I'd like to replace just the mirrors (not the whole assembly). But I'll be dogged if I can see a way to get them out of their casing? I've been told they just sort'a pop-out -- that they're held there by a ball and socket thingy.

Does that sound right to you folks? Just a little pressure from the back and they'll pop out?

Second is that the passenger side mirror *bracket* won't stay put. As I drive it works it's way inward, towards the door. And messes up my view. Again, I see no way to tighten the friction mechanism. I'm sure that showing you the exact mirror setup would help, so let me try to Google up something:

Hard to see but, these look like the exact mirrors on our model.

Any ideas on how to make them tighter? Less likely to swing in as I'm driving?

thank you!

    Any fixes out there?

    Yes there is!
I have the same problem with both mirrors. While I can roll the window down on my side to bring it back in position the passenger side can't be reached from the drivers seat.

The passenger side one keeps moving out of adjustment just enough to prohibit me from seeing what I need to pass which has put me in some dangerous situations.

And don't laugh just yet, but what I finally found to fix the problem was plastic tubing. Like the type you use for the air hoses on a fish tank only a little bit bigger diameter!! You can find it any hardware store.

I cut a small piece of it bend it in half and stick it in the very tiny opening that allows the mirror to move. That piece of plastic tubing is 'still' there doing it's job for 20,000 miles and counting!

The mirror fix cost me a whole dollar because I had to buy a foot of it.:B
  • Probably the best thing you can do is replace those mirrors with Velvac Mirrors.

Find the part # you need depending on power, heated, etc., and if you want black or white, then see if you can get a set cheap on eBay. They also have good prices here at Ryder Fleet Products.

Nice thing about the Velvac is that you can buy replacement heads and even just the mirror glass if you need it.

  • I don't know about the top mirror but to replace the bottom mirror you have to break the mirror to get to the mounting screw.

Have you considered talking the local Chevy dealer? I got more help from the parts department that the service center.
