I can't see where there should be a problem doing what is proposed. As long as the inverter can handle the start draw that only lasts a second or two the running amps should be easily supplied by a 100a alternator while it supplies the vehicle needs. I don't see any need for a big battery bank as the use will be power direct from alternator to the AC through the inverter. All the battery has to do is help the inverter with the start draw that the alternator may not be able to supply alone. Proper wire size will be important but otherwise I see no big issues.
that's exactly my thinking. the battery can easily handle any sudden, short-term loads... especially a starter or hybrid battery. i'm just not very knowledgeable concerning alternators and the normal power consumption of a vehicle? sizing will be of utmost concern.
i think another issue may be with the stability of the current from the alternator, but the voltage regulator is supposed to take care of that, correct? just mentioning it because, as everyone here knows, inverters are sensitive to voltage extremes. i think a good quality set-up is key.
