It is very common to have a second wire from the alternator output to go to the back of a truck and on to the battery in a RV trailer. This circuit often has a continuos duty solenoid in it that is activated by the ignition key so it is powered only when the key is on and the engine is running. Something like that between the alternator and the house battery would prevent discharging the chassis starting battery. That setup is also common in motorhomes to charge the house batteries while driving.
i guess the other issue would be the quality of charge from the alternator? obviously there would be no multistage "smart" charging, only an old time absorption charge at a steady 14.3 volts. ould this greatly affect the life of the batteries?
