We're talking about two different approaches. I'm talking about connecting the inverter to the engine battery, not to the house battery. A 6awg cable from alternator to house battery is still too small if OP wants to connect to that battery.
The first step is to see if his alternator is up to the task. He should do that with minimum amount of modifications. Place/secure inverter in engine compartment. Run extension cord from inverter to A/C. Monitor chassis battery voltage.

One thing I would add would be if you already have the circuit with the relay going to your house battery consider upgrading the wire size as that circuit will be asked to carry more amperage than it was intended to carry. I wound think something like 6ga would be a good upgrade.
