You can not run a inverter off the charging wire from the tow vehicle it will blow fuse and melt wires. It is only for slow charging the battery. The hitch and receiver are also part of the bonding or grounding between the trailer and tow vehicle. Was trailer connected to tow vehicle? The wiring sounds like it was fine, your just pulling to many amps. Fix the wires and disconnect the cable when your running the inverter.
