Shower temp adjustment gets too hot

After first adjusting the temperature as desired in the RV shower, we often use the switch on the shower head to temporarily cut off the flow of water. When we turn the switch on the shower head back on, the water is too hot for a while. What causes this and what is the cure?

  • when you push the button on the shower head, the water will flow back through the hot line or cold line at the valves. The way if flows depends on which side has slightly higher pressure and this is randome. Install a sharkbite check valve on the cold and hot supply lines and you will never have this problem again.
In my cabin (has complete rv water system) we would always get a blast of very hot after having the button off for a minute. Last week I installed two sharkbit check valves and it now comes back on the same temp as when shut off.

Heck, my first cut off valve was a 1/2 inch IPT PVC ball valve,, that works just like your garden hose save for one thing... No adapters needed, just one close nipple.

I had the burst of off-temp water problem with it though so switched to a proper shower cut off valve that drip, drip, drips.. That solved the problem for me.. Exact opposite of yours.
  • Our Itasca when the shower head is turned off, it still trickles, then when turned back on you get a burst of cold water. My fix was to put a garden hose valve on the head, you need to get pipe to garden hose adaptors also, they are available in nylon.
    Any way, problem fixed.

  • We sometimes have to be quite frugal with water use, so I hate to do anything to use unnecessary water. If this issue is caused by hot water being pushed from the hot supply at the shower valve into the cold water supply, would a check valve on the cold water supply line at the shower valve solve this?

What causes this is the mix of cold and hot.. As the water heater heats the water it expands and the pressure in the hot line causes some flow of hot water into the cold line.. This is epicaly true if you have a water heater INLET check valve, which I still do not understand why some RV's have those... Page 2.

The cure: A tiny hole in the valve so it never fully closes, or do not quite close it fully so it drips drips drips the excess hot water away.
  • I don't really know the reason but some get cold, others get hot. Most shower head controls don't shut the flow off, but just slow it to a small flow which reduces or stops this effect. I have a shutoff and I just point the shower head away for the first few seconds when I turn it back on.
